If you thought that Bruce Wayne was the one, the only, the irreplaceable, the one true Batman, then you are in for a bit of a shock. It turns out, Batman’s cowl and cape might have just been sported by men besides Bruce Wayne himself. Be it filling in for a sick Mr. Wayne or a missing one may be, there are quite a few Batmen out there. A single Batman? I think not. Here they are!
1. DICK GRAYSON
We know Dick Grayson as Robin, Agent 37 and Nightwing. What might come as a surprise however is that he also donned the Batman mantle, acting as the Crusader a couple of times. The first time being right after Jean-Paul Valley’s little episode, which he helped bringing an end to. Why he had to fill in Bruce’s shoes? Bruce just recovered from a broken back and chose not to reappear as Batman. The second time was after the “Battle for the Cowl” story when Dick Grayson was a part of the Justice League for a brief while. Stories set on alternative Earths and in multiple “Elseworld’s” found Dick Grayson as Batman.
2. JASON TODD
In an attempt to become Bruce Wayne’s true successor, Jason Todd designed his own batsuit and raised his signature dual pistols during the “Battle for the Cowl”. His valiant attempts at becoming a mysterious type of Batman, one that’s way more fear inducing than Batman, were commendable. What ensued was a ferocious fight against Dick Grayson and Tim Drake which was abruptly ended by Todd’s attempt to become The Batman, but not before he almost killed Time with a batarang!
