Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D., the oft-forgotten part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has always struggled to find its place amongst the narrative of the Marvel movies. With the introduction of the Inhumans in its story- a new race of genetically altered humans, with their DNA transformed by the Kree, resulting in their unique superpowers. Season 2 seemed to breathe a wave of fresh air into it. With also an Inhumans movie in the works in 2019, Marvel seems to have finally paid some attention to him.
Although it hasn’t really worked out yet-Skye’s transformation into Daisy Johnson had given the character a definite purpose, but as is seen now, she is still bogged down by redundant drama sub-plots. The Inhumans that have been introduced till now are either killed way before they get serious character development, or they are relegated to bland stereotypes. With the loss of Afterlife, the haven for the Inhumans, the storyline has lost a central fundamentality, other than Daisy’s drama. It still has to make the conflict between the Inhumans and Hydra more engaging. Following is a list through which they can correct the course of the show to a far more interesting turn:-
5. Drop The Love Story
Now…just stop with the imposition of the love story- there is simply no need for the Skye/Daisy to be dabbled in a romantic sub-plot. Chloe Bennet has gradually grown into a strong female lead, with her being able to keep up with the intense close combat sequences. And yet again, it seems a big disservice, as she is bogged down into being engaged in a romantic entanglement once again, that seems quite stagnant. After the falling out with Ward, she had her father trying to protect her as a patriarch, and now, she is just falling for Lincoln subsequently. Now, now….its quite obvious when you try to make some chemistry rather than let it just happen, as is the case with Hunter and Bobbi.
4. Clarify Their Connection To The Films
The show has always been distanced from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It was hugely relevant when it was revealed that there are double agents of HYDRA in SHIELD in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but it was completely undercut by its subsequent film, Avengers: Age of Ultron. They didn’t initiate Inhuman origins to Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch and rather termed as ‘enhanced’. With that, they had completely differentiated the show’s mythology from the films.
With an Inhumans movie scheduled to be released in 2019, the show will try to keep the narrative centrally relevant. And for that, it has to be connected to the Universe. Having said that, Daisy being cast in the film would certainly help things!!
